High summer with a toddler means heat, crowds and long queues for ice cream. Early spring, from March to May, often wins quietly. You get milder weather and shorter waits, and you can stay outside in the daytime without melting.
Why shoulder season feels good
Toddlers love predictability and space to play. With fewer tourists you get calmer beaches, a table sooner, and hotel staff with time to sort out a cot. Flights and stays often cost less than in July, which helps when you plan on request and want to see a quote first.
Southern Europe, lighter
Think of short flights from the Netherlands: the Algarve, parts of Spain or the Balearics in April–May. The sea can still be cool, but you’ll find sun, playgrounds and child-friendly restaurants everywhere. Choose a base with flat paths, a shallow pool or splash corner, and shade. Spring sun is stronger than you think.
City + green instead of museums only
Cities with parks and playgrounds (and stroller-friendly stretches) work better than a schedule packed with museums. One morning outing, afternoon rest: that rhythm fits toddlers, whether you lean toward a southern coast or a greener northern European city. Have a rain plan: indoor soft play, a covered pool, or the room with toys.
What you always check
- Flight length and whether you can go direct.
- Transfer time to the stay.
- Weather: pack layers.
- Whether beach or pool is open and pleasant that month.
- Cot, blackout, fridge.
One base, no hopping
Prefer five to seven nights in one place over three hotels in a week. Toddlers bloom once the bedroom feels familiar. Day trips from a fixed base beat pack-unpack cycles.
