Keeping a routine on holiday with a toddler (without becoming the holiday police)

Holiday means no schedule… until your toddler starts singing at 5:17 a.m. A little routine holds the adventure together. Keep the anchors and loosen the details.

Bring three anchors

  1. A similar wake time (give or take an hour).
  2. One solid nap or rest block in the day.
  3. The same bedtime ritual: wash or bath, pyjamas, book, song, lovey.

Those three cues tell a toddler brain: “I’m safe, even if the room smells different.” A white-noise app, blackout fabric or curtain clips, and the familiar sleep lovey deserve a fixed spot in hand luggage.

Build activities around the nap

Plan the “big” outing in morning energy. After lunch, return to the room or take a quiet stroller walk. Late afternoon can be light and local: playground round the corner, ice cream, a short beach stroll. That stops bedtime sliding an hour later every night until nobody is cheerful.

Flexible where it can be

Different breakfast times, a later dinner, the odd nap in the stroller instead of the bed: all fine. Missed a nap? Move bedtime thirty to sixty minutes earlier rather than forcing a “holiday bedtime”. A screen can rescue a rest moment now and then. You set the limit, and you can leave the guilt at home.

Travel cot as the sleep base

Set up the travel cot or sleep space as soon as you arrive. Let your child play in it during the day so it isn’t a “weird box” at midnight. Keep nights sacred in the room; hotel bars until eleven belong to another life stage.

Back home

Once you’re home, you can tighten the schedule again in the first days. Toddlers often bounce back quickly when the anchors feel familiar. You will too, after a coffee.

Parents need a mini-routine too

Swap evening duties: one parent does bedtime, the other tidies up or showers. Plan a short “adult half-hour” after the toddler falls asleep, with tea on the balcony or an episode with earbuds. Rested parents hold the anchors more easily. If a night goes sideways, start again the next day. Your holiday doesn’t need to be perfect to be good.
